I've read alot lately from from women on here saying how bad rap videos are, and that they depict woman in a negative manner..Basically saying rappers need to clean up their lyrics, videos, etc..Now Im not saying all females in general think this, but the people on here talking about it..Im not here just to argue whatever you say, but I want to know your stance on women and rap music? State who you think is to blame for presentation of women by some rappers, and why you think women are presented in a negative manner? Anything else you wanna add feel free..All opinions welcome

now this is what i think: One, I think some females need to realize all rappers do not talk about the same thing, dont penalize all rappers just for some lyrics by the everyday radio artists..If you dont consider yourself to be a b**** or a hoe, why are you offended by the lyrics? If you dont dress half-naked, why do you care? Those are just some of the questions I have for you all..

i say all opinions welcome and of course the first person who answers takes advantage of that...i guess i should've rephrased the question to "Your stance on women in rap music"

person_from_another_…: thank you for pointing out that the word b**** has different meanings

no one: great response, but it would've been just as great with the first 3 sentences and the last 3 sentences.

The truth is always most apparent. Truth simply is, beyond all else. That's how you can recognize it. As far as women and rap music goes, the truth is that it's the way it is because that's what works. It's been around since it was created 30 some years ago. And only now people are beginning to find offense to it? nonsense. A lot of people don't like adult film, myself included, but that doesn't mean that it's illegal. Freedom of speech will forever protect the right for people to say whatever they want no matter how ridiculous or offensive. Just not on certain venues where censorship comes into play. If someone doesn't like rap music they should go to it's source. Everyone knows that the sponsorship goes where the money is. If somehow people stopped buying albums then of course Warner Brothers and other record labels would suddenly find ethical enlightenment, magically. If it brings in revenue, they couldn't care what it was as long as it wasn't illegal and or a liability. For that reason sponsorship will always exist until people boycott or otherwise threaten their assets or cashflow. The communities will always buy rap music due to support of the culture, sense of identity, fear of ostracism which is a major fear of any community especially one's of minorities whose self esteems are already abused by being expected to do wrong and evil. Their only esteem lies in the opinion of their peers and if they lost that they'd have nothing. Thus we have thugs and gangs and Codes of Ethics within communities. The poorer areas are so cold but you get credit for being raised and grown in the tougher areas. You get respect. And that's more important to money on that level. On the other hand the rappers have to play corporate. ANd they are playing, that's why you have people like Jay-z when being asked on Dateline why he said all of his derogatory defamation towards women he said "It just shows that a person can grow". Had that been asked by the hip hop culture on BET or the like, I bet he'd have a very different answer. I can't respect someone who isn't thorough and I can't respect someone who is supposed to be superior, who talks a big game, but doesn't have a consistent personality. Someone who changes according to whom their talking to isn't a person, it's a chameleon. It's someone who's supplicating to the opinion of others. In essense the entire rap community could be seen to exist because of low self esteem, the need to belong, and the fear of ostracism. Their abandonment makes them afraid and edgy. Yet their fear of judgement makes them fake as though they're tough or emotionless when they're clearly neither due to circumstance. Misunderstandings and Past stereotypes by other ethnicities make them constantly prone to oppression and hate and discomfort and that bends the culture even deeper out of shape to even lower self esteem. Anger ensues because nobody will accept them. They give up on the world and base their lives upon their only asset. Their respect, their image by their peers, the only ones who accept them. ANd that even further supports their fear of ostracism. There is lack, the respect is all they have left. If they lost that, they'd probably kill themselves for they'd have nothing left. Thus they do whatever it takes to avoid that pain. THey attempt to uphold thuglife because others views force them to. They beat and abuse women and talk about it. They talk about not caring about them because there parents mistreated them never liked them or women abused them prior emotionally. They learned that it's better to be immoral and have respect than to be good and be ostracized. There's no benefit to being good. Nobody cares about being good in the community, they just care about upholding their respect in the eyes of one another and for that reason the rap game and all those within it will continue. Women get wrapped up in this because they see the money and success that comes with being a mainstream rapper and they go ga-ga over the success. Men are crazy over women with attractive bodies and gorgeous faces and women are crazy over men with money and success. Likewise vice versa in some cases a women could care about a man that looked good and a man could care about a woman with money but that's secondary to the proportion of men who love looks and women who love status. Thus the women chase the status and the money like moths to the flame. They can't help it it's in their innate drives. Like men can't help but to lust or think adulterous thoughts most often. Women who can't help it or who are below average can't help but love it. Women who have looks or intelligence see the stereotypes and they hate them because they hold them back from their place in the world. People mistake them for the lower versions of their demographic just as though sellout males in business hate the hip hop culture because they often are seen as that because the other choose to live that lifestyle thus giving the whole demographic a band name, others expect all of that ethnicity to live up to it and sellouts hate that that's pushed upon them because of them. SO naturally it'll continue until someone pulls funding. WHen the money starts changing or people start boycotting then we'll see change. Until that point nothing will happen. They can make a movement all they want to, nothing will move until the money moves. And that's that.

Okay, some music video's, (and some rap songs in general) do kind of depict women in a negative manner. First off, I'd like to say that the blame for this needs to go to our culture that seems to be obsessed with sex--and the dirty south because this is where most this music comes from. Second of all, you are right that if you are not a hoe or a b*tch then you shouldn't be offended by the lyrics.
P.S. By the way, the usage of the word b*tch is not necessarily negative, look at Biggie Small's "Me and my b*tch"...It's a freakin song about how much he loves her--is that degrading?

Women need to stop giving rappers a subject to talk about. It wouldn't be in the song or in the videos unless a women agreed to it. Women need to start respecting themselves and quit giving these rappers an opportunity to disrespect us.

Women see themselves in all other women, when a woman is called a hoe, then it reflects all females. Thats why some care. Personally I don't, but when you go out and some man calls you such...then you have to take offense.

Bottom Line: We live in a free country, which means not only freedom of speech, but freedom of expression, So unless we are going to begin censoring all aspects of life in general, these insecure people need to get off hip hop's nuts! We are also in a society that has created another handy invention called the remote, and when things that you don't like or agree with are on the T,V, screen, you can use it to change the channel, and all those images that you disagree with just disappear for you. But for those of us that enjoy them, they are still there to enjoy! And this is coming from a true independent female who loves her some rap music and videos!

I have no problem with Rappers using the word Bi**h and all of the other words that they use when they are talking about a particular female because I know that they are not talking about/referring to me. The Rappers decide to talk about it, and the video girls decide to show up and "shake it" for the camera.

It's sad that a female would actually lay on bed (wearing a bikini) while Rappers throw money on her to "make it rain", but she has to deal with it, and she gets paid for it. U won't catch me doing that.

Its really stupid to expect women not to get offended and assume that the rapper is talking about someone else and saying "I aint no *****'. Thats called being ignorant. Its disgusting how women are portrayed but its even worse when women accept it and worser when they try to live up to what they are being called. Its equivalent to someone calling a black person a ******, and then having that person say ' oh its ok, they're not talking about me.
I have no idea why women listen to mainstream rap music despite the way they are talked about.

Mainstream hip-hop is just a small part of the hip-hop spectrum. There are plenty of rappers who either pronounce their love for women or are indifferent on the subject.
