Music is as much a science as it is an art. It requires a lot of math. An understanding of how certain notes and sounds combine are also comprehended by the mind.

A good composer can write a flawless (flawless, not necessarily good) piece without an instrument in front of him.

Personally, I think music is a gift from God.

Sound waves that can only be detected by small bones near the ear behind the jaw, give marvelous pleasure and bring us to emotions and thoughts for extended periods.

God chooses to touch a few of us, and bless them with the gift of composition. Some can develop it further. Most of us can only enjoy the results.

the human mind is hard wired to like simple harmonies and dislike complex harmonies.

for example, if a sound is 100 hz, a second sound of 200 hz would sound very nice (and be exactly 1 octive higher), 150 hz would also be pleasing to the ear, but slightly less so. 125hz and 175hz would be sort of pleasing.

110 hz or 95hz would sound awful, you can actually hear a loud thumping sound when 2 frequencies are very close, but off.

its all fractions. wholes, halfs, quarters, thirds.

major chords sound 'happy', because the notes that make them are fractions or ratios that line up. minor chords sound 'sad' becase one note is slighlty off.

Well, first one has to be "musically inclined."

Granted, even children can "make up" songs, but they don't all do it.

Once you have some experience with studying, playing, listening to music, you can "compose" melodies and "hooks" in your mind with ease.

Musical tones are to some what colors are to others; they can "work" with them mentally.
