Perhaps the natural desire to feel attractive is a subconscience way of trying to be successful. Studies show that more attractive people are generally more successful and treated better in life than those who are less attractive. So overall, looks MUST be pretty important in society. It's sad..but seems true..

When you first meet someone you don't say "they have a nice personality". Looks are the first thing you see. It is true that the more attractive people are the ones that are more successful but that isn't the only reason they are more successful.
When you feel good about yourself you know you can do anything and go for it, but if you don't feel good about yourself then you really don't think you can go far in life so you don't really try.
There are always exceptions though.

The outward beauty is what makes the first 5 minute impression.
It is what men look for first in a woman.
It is what certain employers look for depending on the postions.
However, people are finding out that beauty can quickly turn into ugly once they have seen what really lies underneath it all.
The personality is what really makes or breaks a person and their sucess in life. After all take a good look at some of the hollywood stars. I would say some of them are not that attractive and if you had seen them on the street would not have looked twice. However, they have a skill that they are good at and a fun personality which makes up for all of that.
Would you say Simon from American Idol, is attractive? Probably at one time before he opened his big mouth. Now he is one of the most disliked men in T.V.

i both agree and disagree without that appearance does matter it says allot about a person whether they are a complete slob, but not self centered sometimes people who don't spend much time in the mirror each mourning are trying to make use of there time in other more important ways or maybe it just says they don't care about appearance they are lazy . i believe that people don't judge you buy how attractive you are they don't judge you that way and see you as more successful because your more attractive but i think they will see you as more successful by how your hair is done and makeup and stuff like that just shows them that you do care that you don't look like a slob. therefore you'll make more of an effort if that makes any sense whatsoever

Inner beauty is more important than the superficial outer beauty that can be created by plastic surgery, makeup and such. The outer appearance of the body can be changed at will if you have enough money or choose to go in debt to change the appearance. A person who is considered physically beautiful by whatever standards who is self centered, whiny, demanding, egotistical, or generally lacking in concern for anyone but themselves has no true beauty. True beauty comes from the inside.

You're just realizing now that the impressions we give out are important in life? Not only looks, but the entire way one presents themselves is of paramount importance.
And this goes DOUBLE for people who give the impression of being a moron by not taking the time and care to use the English language properly. Nice job on your question, but some of them are atrocious!

Well if you present yourself more and make yourself look good then you'll get more respect. But looks definately aren't everything. If you're polite and social and know what you're doing like in an interview, you'll mostly likely have a chance of getting the job. People who think looks are everything, they're sooo shallow.

Taking care of yourself and looking your best are important and we pick up on people who do that and gravitate toward them. However, this does not give us an excuse to dismiss someone as inferior because there appearance doesn't meet our standards and I think that is the meaning behind the age-old saying "looks aren't everything."

I agree, although a good personality and humor are great. looks do allot to get what you want out of life.It is much harder for an unattractive person to succeed in many factors of life. I'm sorry it is like this, but it is true.

If that is true, why are there so many obese people? It makes no sense because I know obese people and they don't even find other obese people attractive. So only like 25% of people want to be sucsessful? Something isn't adding up.

looks are not the only thing one needs to be attractive. looks are only on the surface. when a person in confident on the inside, nothing can stop him from accomplishing his goals. i will choose confidence over looks.
