I mean Greg Oden is pretty much the next big man to take over the league. Since SA got Timmy they have been a championship caliber team and can arguably win the title every year. If Oden takes Portland to the playoffs this next year do you think they are automatically a championship caliber team, or just another 2nd round exit team? what do you all think.

It takes big men a certain amount of years to develop. It took Shaq 2 seasons to make the playoffs and a 3rd season to get to the finals but this was in a weaker eastern conference. Greg Oden has a lot of potential but he's going to have some growing pains duking it out with the great bigs of the west. Oden's presence can instantly transform the Trailblazers into a playoff team because big men's often play a vital role in a team's offense by commanding the double team and opening up the court for shooters and drivers. On defense, they also provide an intimidating presence in the middle and allow guards to play better defenses by taking more chances in attempting steals. However, to be considered a championship caliber team, you need a good complementary great small player to take care of business outside the paint. Shaq wouldn't have won a title in Miami if he didn't have Wade slicing and dicing through defenses or knocking down the jumper when defenses clamped down on the Diesel. As great as Tim Duncan was but I can't imagine him winning as much championships without great complimentary wing players like Tony Paker and Manu Ginobili.

What Portland does have is a future All-Star combo guard in Brandon (Rookie of the Year) Roy and a lanky Chris Bosh type of forward who blocks more shots in Lamarcus Alderidge. Roy may not be as athletic as many guards these days but he is a smart player who rarely makes a bad decision. He will be the perfect outside complement to Oden's inside game. Alderidge should complement Oden in the same way Duncan complemented David Robinson and Rasheed Wallace completed Ben Wallace. Both of these tandems have championship title(s) on their resume. So to answer your question, the Blazers should be a playoff team in 2 - 3 years because it will take Oden and the Blazer some time to get acquainted with each other and develop team chemistry. In 5 years, you could be looking at one of the playoff powerhouses in the West. It's great to be optimistic but sometimes you have to be realistic as far as expectation goes.

NO! When Tim Duncan GRADUATED, we all knew! There was hype! He was gonna play with The Admiral. I think that relationship worked out well. LeBron had major hype. Oden is gonna play for the Bengals of the NBA. Portland isn't much better with him.
Oden cannot be in the conversation about anything NBA. He could be Duncan or he could be Joe Smith.

Young ballers Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudamire and Chris Bosh will use this guy right now.
How well do you think he will do against Yao, Garnett or Ben Wallace for the next 4 years. Or against West Coast rivals like Suns or Warriors who will try to run him out of the gym? Or the best defensive schemes? Does he have a strong work ethic and will he keep his nose out of trouble?

Portland will not be in the playoffs next year.

I think it's too soon to tell. After all, Duncan did have David Robinson when he came into the league, so that made things a lot easier for him. Also, we don't know what type of player he's going to be. His offensive game to me looks like it could use a lot of work. For all we know he may not be the next Duncan, Ewing, or David Robinson. He could be the next Dikembe Mutombo!

That wouldn't make him a bust, because Mutombo was still great despite his lack of offense. But he wasn't a franchise type of player either. I mean really look at his all around game and tell me if he's ready to come into the league like all those guys and average 20 points a game right away?

hell no tim duncan is the main suitable power forward in nba historic previous and oden is to harm providers. Timmy will stay with the spurs until he retire. He nevertheless has 3 years left in him. he's the main suitable spur of all time

duncan isnt good with out his team mates,(manu, parker, bowan),oden wont win without a good g to give him the ball and make plays for him,no one will win all alone, lebron?he was basically alone since hughes couldnt play.one person can only go so far, also the spur cant win a title with out cheap shots(ie,suns vs spurs games)last year the suns won against them without amare, becuz they played fair, but they were worried this year and did what they did expecting a big rise out of them.they wont be able to do that for long.

Didn't you hear what Tim Duncan told Lebron? It will be the Lebron James Era.

Let the kid get into the league before you crown him! I hate Michael Jordan for the over-hype league he created!
