oil sands are when oil is mixed with sand. so to extract the oil they have to seperate it from the sand first and then further refine the oil like they usually do. the largest oil sands fields are in Canada. oil from other places is usually found deep within rocks and bedrock where they have to drill for it.

Being a oilfield worker for 26 years,
the oil sand is in reference to formation sand.
there are hundreds of formations from shale to brown dolomite, limestone, you name it!
