Just alittle advise. I too wanted to try to do this for the environment. I purchased the push mower that our local Lowes had. The first one that we got well it was broken right out of the box. Seems like it had too many plastic parts and we noticed several pieces broken when we removed it from its box. Back to the store to get a replacement. This one the same model worked well on our yard after we cut the grass with the motor mower once to get it to the short level the push mower required. Well after the strenous workout to get the grass cut we thought we had made a fair decision. The second time we started using the push mower it just stopped working. It appeared that the chain the turns the blades had slipped. There was no way to get into the wheel covering to fix this problem. The store said that they would have to send it off for repair. We would have to pay for the shipping. I was so discouraged that this was the case I just got my money back. I think if you could find one of the older push mowers like our parents and grandparents used then it would most likely have metal parts and be more simple to repair yourself. This is just my opinion and I am looking for an older model myself. Until then I will be let using the standard motor mower.
Just look at whatever model you decide on and see if you will be able to fix it if needed and look for few plastic parts.
Good Luck and I am glad to see that others are concerned about our environment as well.

Use only a 30 weight oil, a 10w-30 is a thinner oil and will not provide the same lubrication in a lawn mower as a 30 weight. The 10w is a 10 weight oil which has a 30 weight lubricating factor in a car engine. A lawn mower needs the full 30 weight oil. In a car the 10w 30 is thinner and provides better lubrication at low temperatures and for cold starting situations. If you use the 10 w 30 you risk burning out the cheaper bearings in the lawn mower. Go to a auto parts store and get the 30 weight, the price is about the same.

This is called a "reel" mower. We bought one from Lowe's; Home Depot also has them. Ours was $120. They do have some limitations, such as they don't cut grass as short as gas/electric mowers, and your grass cannot be over 6" tall. They are not difficult to push. They are not loud. This is an excellent environmental choice!

I have recently been doing alot of looking in to the Reel mowers.Look up the Scotts Classic Reel mower. Its is probably the best value. Good job you are helping the environment, your lawn and your health.

They are hidden, but can be found at Lowe's and Home Depot even here in California. American Mower makes most of the brands under many different labels.
I bought one, but after just one hot & tedious attempt, sold it at my next garage sale and hired a fantastic neighbor for $25 a trip including mowing and trim.
Sears has a blade sharpening service...just in case you actually do this.
