My first thought is that you have a virus or some sort of malicious software on your computer. Run a full system scan with your current anti-virus (make sure it is up-to-date.) If you don't have an anti-virus program at the moment then download one at.

Also, try cleaning you temporary internet files/cookies. For this go to---File--tools---internet options and then do it from there.

Do you have RAM overload?
Is your computer running hot - fans going bad?
Are you on dial-up?
1. Free up as much RAM as possible:
PC Tune-up Tips
Source: http://www.pctuneuptips.com/tips/pc_speed_tips/?ref=insert
At PCTuneUpTips we recommend the following tips for regular maintenance:
1. Defragment your hard drive weekly
2. Use ScanDisk to search for and fix hard drive problems
3. Clean out your temporary files folder
* Recommended Windows Cleaner: WinClear Free Download
(or, from Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options. Delete Cookies, Delete files, offline files, clear history.)
4. Check the number of applications loading at startup, disable any unnecessary apps
* Free Download: Use RegCure to Control Windows Start-up programs
(Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add-Remove – carefully remove anything you don’t need daily.)
5. Keep your computer fans clear of dust, hair and debris, make sure airflow is good so your hardware doesn’t overheat causing errors. (Carefully, according to User’s Guide, disconnect AC, remove cover, clean fans.)
6. Run a weekly spyware scan to ensure you haven’t picked anything up while surfing or downloading
* Our Recommendation: Free Spyware Scan with XoftspySE
7. Reboot at least once a week to clear any fragments of non-running programs
8. Turn on Windows Automatic Updates to ensure you have the latest performance patches and hardware driver updates
9. Clean your Internet Explorer cache and temp files
(From Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options, delete cookies, delete files, offline files, clear history.)
* Use WinClear to remove Internet History and Temp Files: Free Download Here
10. Ensure there are no large files stored on your Windows desktop, these can slow performance dramatically

As for dial-up - it does cut you off and runs slow -- had it, went cable.

Some websites kick you out if there is no activity after a certain time on password protected contents like banking info or emails.
This protects you if you forget to log out and someone walks up to your machine and peeks at your phone records, email, or banking.

try turning your computer off, leave it off for a few minutes and then re boot and try again. If this doesn't work, I would follow up with a virus scan.
