That is the bummer about Amazon; separate shipping charges if you're buying from an Amazon vendor. Amazon does offer super saver shipping if you purchase $25.00 or more, but you're right - that means every book has to come from Amazon rather than different sellers that sell through Amazon.
Half.com does have slightly cheaper rates if you purchase books from the same seller.
eBay might be a good bet because you can often find a "lot" of books. I got interested in an author and checked her out - found 3 of her books for 99 cents, so it worked out well for me.
If you're willing and able to buy in person, definitely check thrift stores and used bookstores in the area. I don't know what types of books you're looking for, if they are all a certain author or a certain genre. You can create a Want It Now post on eBay and let sellers know exactly what you're looking for.
I hit Salvation Army tonight and found quite a few like new and very good books, so if you're willing to hunt, it can happen.

I have 2 suggestions. First, try www.powells.com. They are the nations largest bookstore in one location. 3 floors 1city block. If anyone has a chance, they should visit that store. They are in Portland, Oregon and have new and used books. They might offer free shipping on qualified orders over $50.
Second, for book sales sponsored by the friends of the library, go to www.book-sales-in-america.com. Scrooll down until you see a map of the U.S. Click on your geographical area, then you will see a list of the next library sales for the next 6 months in your area.

Watch for book sales at your local library. Ours has a book sale, several times a year. You can buy books very cheap, sometimes a brown paper bag full for $1.00. Check your library and see if they do the same thing.

Yard sales and thrift shops are great! You can often get them very cheap and by the bag full. SOmeone else also mentioned library sales -- great idea.
You can also try e-bay, they often have people selling large lots of books and you just pay one shipping charge.

A used book store would be the best bet if you want to buy in bulk.
