Go directly to the legit agencies. Check out their websites, they have their physical requirements and their open call / submission information right there. No $$$ required. You do not need a portfolio when you haven't done any work yet, but if you have photos by all means take them! You do need to have something, but like I said look at what they ask for on their websites.
Good luck!

I would not use IMTA or ITS as a break for modeling. While I'm not familiar with Barbizon Modeling Agency (what does that say?), a quick and easy background check (can be done easily online, search: background checks), will tell you for sure. Same goes for the Reinhard Agency.
Some of the better modeling agencies are Ford and Elite models. iGroup I hear is also pretty good at booking.
Some others I am familiar with would be; Affiliated Models, Inc., and United Talent Agency.
As with any agencies, make sure they are legit by doing a background check, and remember, anything that charges fees upfront is a SCAM.
Don't forget to be a great model, this means having a great portfolio with great shots, headshots and composites.
Good luck on your modeling career!

Any agency that charges you a fee is a scam, agents don't make their money until you book a job for them. True agents are typically hard to get because of this. This is how an agent works:
You mail in your headshot and resume, and by the grace of God they like you, so they call you in for an audition or interview and agree to freelance with you, this means your not signed yet but they're gunna test run you. So they send you out on a call or two and you book one. The agent then takes 10% of whatever you make from that job. Then they will probabley sign you. They only sign people who they know are going to book jobs for them and make them money.
That is the only way an agent is allowed to make money, managers on the other hand are different because they can take whatever percentage they want.
Get a copy of the Ross Reports, it's a complete listing of legit agencies that are accepting mail ins right now.

All scams! I work at the hotel where IMTA has their annual convention. It makes me sick to see all the people who get taken year after year. If you want to model go about it properly. Go through the agency/school thing and you'll get the same result. No modeling career. But at least it'll cost less. And NY gal knows what she is talking about. If you don't live in a major city there is no work.

The tried and true way for any aspiring model to get ahead is first to get a good portfolio with pictures, you need many of them to nicely leave at the front desk of modeling agencies. The ones that guarantee anyone who pays a career or work are frauds, the most they are are 'finishing' schools, who can teach how to dress, walk, and behave.

I have modelled when I was younger but not any more.
For a legit agent in you area go to:
www.agentsassociation.com
I haven't heard of either of those agencies but you could check them on the above website, if they are legit they'll be on there.
NEVER pay for an agent, they get paid when you do, normally 10%of what you get.
Good luck!
