Alright, so I have a Toshiba laptop A45-S121 (or something like that). The warranty has expired and it keeps shutting off from overheating. I checked the fan and it's completely clogged with dust. The entire blade is totally covered. I would take off the back and try and clean the fan but I'm not sure how. Compressed air won't work because it'll just blow the dust into the computer and clog something else. What should I do?

As a long-time Toshiba laptop user of multiple models, I'd say that they do have a heat issue anyway. There are little things that you can do to prevent the buildup, but it sounds like you are way beyond those.

Short of opening the case yourself, there are a few mom & pop PC stores out there that do feel comfortable with poping the clamshell open and taking out the grime and corruption that piles up in there. However, that should not be your first action even though it may be the cheapest solution.

Technically, compressed air will do the job, but you have to use a better 'tool' than just canned air. They just don't pack the wallup that a compressor can. A good compressor will also dry the air out. Canned air tends to have a little more moisture than you want. There is an air-flow path and if you follow it, you will not blow it back into the machine.

Obviously, you want to work the junk out the proper way it should go, but when that isn't possible and your machine isn't under warranty anymore, seek out a qualified Toshiba service center first. At least get their take on it. Usually, a little advice over the phone is free! If they want an arm and a leg and you are down to one of each, you may consider the mom & pop store option. ;)

Go to a computer store or any hardware store and look for an aersol can that says something like Air duster. you spray it through a straw it includes and it should send the dust out the other side of the vent. You can also use this to clean your keyboard. Also make sure that it doesn't have water in it. So a non-water Aersol spray. Water will damage your computer so don't buy one of those. There are some that specifically are labeled for computers.

Find the service manual and disassemble it until you can get to the fans and unclog them.
