I currently drive a Nissan Sentra, but any time it rains or snows my car is all over the road. This has been ok, but I'm looking at moving to a small Nebraska town where snow removal could be sketchy and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on a good (fuel effecient) vehicle.

If your car is all over the road chances are your tires are worn out or they are no good. Living in the north east my whole life anything awd is preferable. I have owned allot of cars of all types and since I have owned Subaru there has been nothing better for winter driving. Check out the Impreza. We recently owned a 2001 sentra, and you will be impressed at the build quality difference. Our mileage averages about 25-28 mpg good for an awd. My brother's larger outback gets 22-24.
Remember the most capable vehicles will go nowhere with the wrong or worn out tires.

P.S. we also have two full size 4x4s an suv and pick up. as long as the snow is less than 8" the subi outperforms them in every way.

Anybody ride in the back seat? If not, lay a couple bags of rock salt in on the floor in the back. This should add about 80 to 100 lbs to the weight spread out evenly between your tires. If you put it in the trunk it will add that weight to your back tires alone. Then if the roads are really bad it could cause you to slide farther, or cause you to swing out into a slide. The best thing you can do is put the weight inside the car on the floor. It also helps in keeping the weight at a lower center of gravity, while adding traction. And also should you get stuck you have the salt there to help get you out.

OK, the best car for snow, in my opinion is the Subaru legacy. I have had a Subaru for ever, they last and are the best in the snow. (I have had a Subaru for the past 20 years) I live in New England, and its ether rain or snow, never once was i in an accident with my Subarus. They are the best. I remcomend the newer legacys. They give a lot of zip for their buck. I love subauru's and would never consider another car.

Wish you all the best and many safe winters,

Nollie

You can live with your car if you plan to buy a set of Nokian all season tires. They are made in Sweden and also are the most popular in all of the Norwegian Countries. They also make a dedicated studded snow tire when conditions become Miserable.
I live in upstate NY and I'm familiar with miserable!

save your cash. buy 4 winter snow tires and have them studded. forget about the laws if you cannot use them in your state. you will find them to be the best money you ever spent on anything in your life. also remember the throttle works both ways, and make no sudden changes in steering, breaking,or acceleration in snowy or rainy conditions.good luck.

Ford Escape. Also, a nice set of Michelin's will improve your current car. It's the tires not the car.
