Why do some people put down others to make themselves feel more confident?
If someone were truly better wouldn't they behave in such a way that reflected their "greatness" instead of acting like a bunch of hoodlums spreading hate and lies?

If they were such a great person and better then you they would have respect for themselves and others and not put anyone down to make themselves feel better

You are right. In order for anyone to change, a seed of change must be planted. Some people have never had anyone take the time, nor the effort to sow a good seed and tend to it until the harvest comes. This is the job of parents, teachers, the communities at large. We are all falling short, aren't we?

The realisation that they're not better than someone - jealousy - or society's strain on them for working harder and obtaining power etc... some people do the weirdest things to make themselves feel like they are higher on the society ladder - in any way - than someone they're jealous of.

there's nothing we can do about it, but I'm going to opt for medical psychology to give this behaviour more attention and to name it a psychological dysfunction - let's see how many people start being humane again...

It depends:
(Eph 4:15 KJV) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Sometimes people speaking the truth are considered as speaking hate, when their motives are to save others from danger and injury.
The Jews considered the speech of the Apostles as hate, when in truth it was an act of love seeking to save others from eternal punishment.

Good question. It's probably because these "hoodlums" aren't better than anyone, but for some odd reason, think that they are. Perhaps it has to do with their intelligence (or lack thereof).

Some people have no other way to gain succes but to tear others down. They lack any real drive, intellect or character so they resort to name-calling, insults and ridiculous questions or comments to draw others into their mental trap. Personally, I ingore the infidels and move on being who I am and seek to be the better person always.

I have forever failed to grasp the concept that one person is, or even can be, "better" than another. One may be better at something than another, or better prepared than another, but "better" than? I think those who feel that way have a major problem with their mental wiring. Although, your premise indicates that you may be more concerned with a person acting superior to another. To me, its not the same thing. The latter can well be a fact, but superior to, is not better than.

I agree... people who put down others are just trying to feel better about themselves. How sad for them.

Because that is the only way they can deal with their OWN low self esteem. This makes them feel better about themselves.
