For example: How would I put sin^(4) 5x in my TI-89? When i push the sin button, it says "sin( ). It won't let me put ^4 without it being wrong. How should i put it in to be right? Sin (1)^4?

You want to enter this:

sin(5x)^4

The calculator knows to calculate the sine first, then raise it to the fourth power. If you want to be extra safe, simply add parentheses:

(sin(5x))^4

It's simply customary to write the exponent before the argument inside the sine function when using pen and paper.
