You said that you can only put very little weight on it and that you have to use crutches to walk, that doesn't sound like a minor injury to me. Believe me, you don't need to break a bone to do serious damage to your knee. The ligaments that hold your knee together could be torn and this has to be ruled out. If these injuries are not fixed as soon as possible, there is a very good chance of it getting worse and costing you a lot more pain and money in the end.

You might've bruised the bone.
But I'm not a doctor.
Plus you haven't specified where on your knee it hurts.
Just keep off your feet for the next few days and continue icing it for twenty minutes each night.
Remember that ice shouldn't be in direct contact with your skin and that, while icing your knee, if your knee begins to hurt, remove the ice and don't put the ice back on for the rest of the day.
If the pain hasn't lessened at all since last night, I really would recommend going to the doctor.
But if you can't wiggle your toes or rotate your ankle, you need to go to the doctor.

Did you say injury to the knee? Well, there are few components to a knee. They are
1. knee ligaments.
2. knee cartilages.
3. knee bones.
Few of those who answered you are correct; i.e.
1. You need a doctor consult.
2. Get some pain killer - acute pain can lead to chronic pain which is more difficult to treat.
3. You need an x-ray.
4. If not treated properly, may lead to permanent injury.
Suggestion:
1. See an orthopedic doctor urgently.
2. You may need an arthroscopy to see what has happened in the knee joint.
For your main question: The period of recovery depends on what tissue has been injured and how it has been treated.

it's been 7 months since I had a similar experience. I am still experiencing some pain (bearable) - healing takes a long time, it seems, even tho a dr. said "no fracture" . Meantime, I use heat treatment and plaster to minimise the pain

Sorry to hear this, but you will be out of commission for about 6-8 weeks. Take care. ICE and elevate your leg.

you will not know if it's broken or damaged unless you have an xray. you can't get an xray without a doctor's order. so your question is a moot point. the orthopedist (a doctor) will give you an indication of your healing time.

You did some damage to it, it could be a pull or sprain, or something more serious, you need to have it checked before you cause permanent damage.
