Native Son - long (more than 500 pages) but an excellent story about a young man who kills a young woman accidentally and the aftermath that he and the whole city of Chicago deal with.

I love long books -- epics where you are with the same characters for a really long time.
Favorites: Robin Hobb, Ursula Le Guin, Robert Jordan.
Good reviews and descriptions of fantasy epics:

"Vanity Fair" by Wm Thackeray (it's not really a romance, although it has relationship storylines)

"A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving (not *super* long, but not short either)

and if you're feeling really ambitious, and a little masochistic, "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoyevski

I also second "East of Eden" by Steinbeck
