My very first desktop had a tiny internal hard drive so I purchased a external hard drive and kept all of my music files and pics on it no prob When I was downloading files I just nominated the external drive as the destination drive or just sent files by using the send to option in my mouse basically treat it like a pen type storage device you should have no problem if you have the ext drive installed properly which I guess you have as your G.F showed you how to do it once already best of luck
