how old do you have to be to carry?

i am only 16, am a responsible shooter and member of 4h shooting sports, the ATA, and have completed my hunter safety course, so i do know of the dangers of firearms. i wanted to start carrying a concealed weapon for when i work and other times in MD. im planning on getting a pistol soon("getting" meaning my father purchasing it and letting me use it but its still my money), to shoot in IPSC also. so i was just wondering what the age is, because ive heard of some kids my age being able to.

After doing a little research it looks like 18 is the minimum age to get a carry license in Maryland. There are a lot of requirements and the source I have found state that it is very difficult to get a conceal and carry permit in MD. Good luck.

I'm not familiar with state laws outside of California, but I can tell you it's extremely difficult in California to get a CCW. Our reserve police officers aren't authorized to carry off-duty without a CCW, and it's even hard for THEM to get one. There are only a few hundred issued in the Los Angeles area... usually you have to articulate a VERY good reason why you need to walk around armed. (i.e. you are a delivery boy for a jeweler and carry around a large amount of cash, etc.)

While you sound like a great young man, I'm sorry to say that you have to be 21 to legally own a hand gun, with VERY few exceptions. This also means that legally, you have to be 21 to obtain a CCW.. You can own a long gun at 18.

You should begin your search with your local police department. No need to tell them your age - simply ask them how to apply for a concealed carry application or a carry application.
