They are part of the cat's sensory organs. Helps with judging the size of small areas they are trying to fit into or through. Cut them off and your cat can get disorientated and trapped.

It doesn't really help directly with balance, but it does help a cat to orient itself relative to it's surroundings. Much like the 'curb feelers' your grandpa might have on his old Buick, they tell the cat , for example, how wide an opening is, or how close to the wall they are, etc.

balance. I cut my cats whiskers off when I was little, it was always falling over and running into walls until they grew back. crazy.
