Hi All,
The fan on my laptop has gone out hence my laptop overheats and shuts itself down. Can this be fixed? I have an IBM Thinkpad Model T40 I believe. If it can be fixed, will it be expensive or is it something I can do myself? I'm trying to salvage it instead of buying a new one but would like to no my options first. All input is appreciated. Thanks!

The fan is replaceable and inexpensive.

If you don't mind taking apart the notebook, it really isn't that hard. It is how I learned how to fix them. Just make notes if needed as you go and keep the parts in baggies with labels. Then once you are done, you will have bragging rights.

Unless you really like tinkering around with teeny, tiny screws, and like poking and proding to loosen and put stuff back, then you're screwed - go buy a new laptop. Then again, you've got nothing to lose to try and you might learn something. But, almost none of the IBM Thinkpads come apart easily - you really have to follow step-by-step instructions, have a ton of patience and time, and then have the whole fun of putting it back together again. If it's more than 3 years old, do yourself a favor and ditch it.

Using a desktop mini fan, 3", from Walmart and lifting up laptop 1/2" until replacing a new fan. It's better to use both external and internal fans to keep laptop cool all the time.
