E-machines are the worst Compaqs arenow on the same level as HP(because HP owns Compaq)Gateway is on a downfall(bout the same level now as HP), Dell is just above that, then there is Alienware and a few other High end name brands...

If you are going to buy a cheapie computer (and buy another one about every 3 years), then it doesn't matter much what you get for about $500. Get the best thing you can find in your local Best Buy or other computer store. If you want to go higher end, and keep your computer for 5-6 years, go Dell, but go with the Optiplex line, not the home Dimension line. Spend at least $1K, $1.5K better, $2K for the most you'll probably ever need. Stay away from Vista Home Basic unless you are going the "cheapie" route.

According to Consumer Reports, the top 2 desktop computers are dell. The Dimension E521 is about $200 less than the E520, and they almost have the same ranking. I have a Dell and LOVE it! Hope this helps...

I would say to get a Dell, try going to gotapex.com for deals on dell computers. Can get a really nice one for less then 600.

PS: Dell owns Alienware so they are on the same level.

I recently bought a Dell XPS 410 desktop with a 2.1G core2duo processor. I'm very happy with it.

Personally, I don't have much confidence in Gateway.
