they said I need the account holder do it but I found the damn thing in a cab. how do i do this? how do prepaid accounts work?

I believe if you call the customer service number on the back of your last pre-paid card, they can tell you. I called once for an issue with my pre-paid phone, and they offered the plan options to me then. I believe you can get 500 or 700 minutes for a more reasonable amount than shelling out cash on a card every few days.

First of you, you won't be able to even use the phone. Since the phone was lost and you found it in a cab, the owner of the phone must have called Verizon Wireless and reported lost.

To use this phone the owner of this phone has to release the ESN number on the back of the phone to you willingly. Each Verizon phone has a ESN number and is registered to one particular person. So technically that phone is still registered to the owner. Until he releases the phone ESN number, the account will still be under his or her name. You won't be able to change the prepaid account to a cell phone plan.
