I like to read good novels about cities I haven't been to or know only a little about in order to get a real sense of 'life on the streets.' Much better way to learn than non-fiction. Here is MY list of some modern novelists and the cities they 'cover' that I like. Can you give me names of other novelists and the cities they write about?

Richard Price-NYC, Newark
Steve Lopez, Pete Dexter-Philadelphia
George Pecanos-Washington, DC
Dennis Lehane-Boston
Saul Bellow-Chicago

Others? U.S. or otherwise.

lauren belfer wrote "city of light" which is set in pan-am expo era buffalo. its actually very historically correct, and includes little quirks like a map of the city at the time. a lot of the streets and structures they describe are still standing here today, and it really provides a good picture of what industrialization was to this city.

John Berendt, the author of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is pretty good at that. Try that one for Savannah, GA, or his new release "City of Falling Angels" for a charming look at Venice.

Tom Wolfe -- New York (his book "The Bonfires of the Vanities" is excellent! It is about the city in the 1990's)
