I live in Ohio and I've been to Cedar Point and Put-in-Bay several times. Cedar Point is a lot of fun. There are kids rides in Camp Snoopy and there are a lot of big rides including the biggest rollercoaster in the world, the dragster. There is also a water park but you have to pay extra to get into that. There are many places to eat and it's a great family vacation. Put-in-bay is also a lot of fun. My family stayed in a cottage for a week and one day we rode a boat over to put-in-bay and spent the day there. It's just a little town where you can shop and we had a picnic at the park. We mostly spent the whole day walking around and finding out what was there. It was a lot of fun.

Cedar Point is the best amusement park there is...especially if you like rides. They have great shows and a water park. Go to Kelly's Island. There you can rent bikes or golf carts or take your car. You can see the glaciar grooves or just check out island life or the beach. South of Sandusky about 30 minutes to Seneca caverns (near Bellevue), which are really great if you like exploring caves. Lakeside is a Chautauqua-style resort town where you can stroll the town and shop, go to the live shows in the evening. Go see Marblehead lighthouse and check out the shops close by. There is Wildlife Safari... where you drive your car through a wildlife park and you can feed the animals... Giraffes, Ostriches, and other exotic animals stick their heads in your window and demand to be fed... kind of fun especially for kids. There are several water parks in the area...where you can stay the night. Close by is Maumee Bay State Park which has a great beach, golf course, hiking and has a great lodge to stay in... or offers camping. If you are a MASH fan check out Tony Packos in nearby Toledo.. Corperal Clinger mentioned in all the time.

Not sure on your interests or demographic, but the waterparks in the area are really good. Soak City is definately the best in the summer, and then there are some indoor parks as well.
The community of Lakeside at Marblehead is a really cool place like Chataqua in New York. Its really quaint and they have great cottages for rent and great little parks, restaurants, shops, and ice cream parlors. They also have a beach, and performing arts programming. Its probably one of the best kept secrets up in that region.
