Sounds like a a Japaneese Beta Fish.
Scientific name=Betta Splendens.
There are mainly two types. The Regular Bta Fish, and
Fan-Tale Beta Fish.
Just search It under "images".

The males are extremely agressive, and thats why it went after its self. If you plan on getting more, keep them seperted.
Betas like a plant to rest in at night. You can get a plastic/real one. You dont have to though.
They come in a variety of colors, and should have at least a gallon, but will live happily in a smaller container.

They live for about 2-4years.

That fish would be a Betta Splenden.
If you go into any pet store, they are kept in individual containers that are usually stacked up. They run anywhere from 2-6 dollars.

It is a betta, probably a siamese fighting fish(Betta Splendens) as they are the most commonly found. They are very hardy.
