I never actually heard of the expression "vampire moon," but the moon is brown because of dust and other particles in the air and the distance of the moon from the Earth. Colors like red and brown have strong wavelengths that can go through the dust and reach Earth, only showing those colors, which is why you get different colors of the moon. It is even possible to get a blue moon, which looks amazing.

it's not visible yet..but i would imagine that we are going to have a half moon as well..haha. i'm on the west coast...it's still daylight out...and will be for another 3 hrs or so.
