Bettas can live in an unheated, unfiltered bowl however they are much more likley to live a longer healthier life if they are in a warm filtered tank. Its a myth that all bettas have to be alone. It honestly depends on your betta and make you sure you DO NOT put a betta with a betta. I have a betta in a 10 gallong tank with 8 neon tetras and a pleco and everyone gets along just fine! If you do decide to put your betta in with other fish make sure you watch then when they all go together. You should know in a matter of minutes how things are going to go. If your betta does not want roomies he'll puff up and start attacking the other fish. Obviously take him out immediatley. If you keep your betta in a seperate none heated or filtered tank change the water once a week AT LEAST becaue of the fact that all of his waste is not being filtered out of his water. Bettas also need to eat every 2-3 days. You can feed them betta food but my betta enjoys tropical fish food much more(don't ask me why) Good luck with your new betta I love mine!!

I had a jarred betta live for over two years by simply feeding twice a week and changing the water every other week.
I just kept the plant jar out of direct sunlight.
