2sqrt(12) + 4 sqrt(27)
prime factor
2sqrt(2x2x3) + 4sqrt(3x3x3)
2sqrt(2^2 x 3) + 4sqrt(3^2 x 3)
2 * 2sqrt(3) + 4*3sqrt(3)
4sqrt(3) + 12sqrt(3)

#1 Factor the numbers inside of the sq.root
#2 Take the sq. root of any factors if possible
#3 same sq. root (â3 ), you can add the terms at the end
2â12 + 4â27
= 2â(3x4) + 4â(9x3)
= 2(2)â3 + 4(3)â3
= 4â3 +12â3
16â3

2(12^1/2) + 4(27^1/2)
= 2(4^1/2 * 3^1/2) + 4(9^1/2 * 3^1/2)
= 2(2*3^1/2) + 4(3*3^1/2)
= 4(3^1/2) + 12(3^1/2)
= (4+12)*3^1/2
= 16(3^1/2)

Follow these rules.
1) Are the radicals the same?
2) Can you simplify either radical?
3) Simplify the radical(s).
4) Once the radicals are the same you can Add or Subtract them.
You add and subtract radicals by combining "Like Terms". Terms that are not alike can be combined if factored. So you need to Factor 12 and 27 into Like terms.
1) Factor 12
2(SQRT(12)) = 2(SQRT(3 * 4))
Factor 3 * 4 into 2 Radicals.
2(SQRT(3))(SQRT(4))
Take the Square Root of 4.
2 * 2(SQRT(3)) = 4(SQRT(3))
Factor 27
4(SQRT(27)) = 4(SQRT(9 * 3))
Factor 9 and 3 into two Radicals
4(SQRT(9))(SQRT(3))
Take the Square Root of 9.
4 * 3(SQRT(3) ) = 12(SQRT(3)
The radicals are Like so now you can add them.
4(SQRT(3)) + 12(SQRT(3)) = 16(SQRT(3))
Go to Amazon or your local bookstore and look for the "Demystified" books in the Math section. They are like the "Dummies" books. They explain everything in simple terms with easy methods to follow for Algebra, Calculus, Geometry etc. I own many of them.
