Nice betta you have. This is a Full-moon! The reason this is called a full moon is because when the betta fully fans out its tail, it makes the shape of a full-moon. This breed of betta was once quite popular in the market for a while - but I personally finds that the most beautiful bettas are those that appeal to you at first sight. (It doesn't matter what others say.)

Other major breeds with different tail structure will be:
1. The veil tail
2. The Butterfly
3. The Crown-tail

Of course, as betta enthusiasts are constantly creating hybrids of betta, you get different kind of tail all the time.

In fact, if you notice, the price of bettas has shifted from the classification of tail to its colours. At the point in time before I left Singapore for Australia, the most popular colour is copper bronze. It is a dark silver colour that reflects light. And charming betta of such colours may cost as much as S$98 each. If you are interested in buying bettas, you shouldn't miss the opportunity when you visit Thailand. Everytime when I visited Thailand, Chatuchak market, I will make sure I bottled 1 to 2 bettas back home. The copper bronze there are only selling from S$22 and some of them has won prizes in International competition. (Sounds really cool isn't it)?

With regards to your previous question on the styrofoam cups for trapping bubbles, it wouldn't think it is necessary until you feel that your male betta is ready for mating. Instead of using floating plants such as water lettuce, moss (which can be quite messy if you are keeping your betta in a small containter especially when fish tends to bite the roots off these plants when they have nothing better to do), you can look out for this big brown leaves (called 'umbrella leaves'). (If you have no idea how these leaves look like, travel to some of the aquariums near your house and you will see these leaves in some of the tanks when the water is brown.)

Dry this leaves until they are brown and crisp. Use 1 leaf to wrap around a styrofoam such that it can float perfectly on the surface of the tank. (If your tank does not have a very large surface, use a smaller piece of styrofoam). Tie the wrapped styrofoam with a string and the other end to a stone or pebble so that it won't float around. The leaf is extremely good in conditioning the water for your betta. It will make the water brown and soft - so that your betta feels just right to make babies. (If you are not prepared to breed them yet, it is absolutely fine leaving the water clear or slightly tinted brown with the leaf.) As these leaves will make the water very brown (almost like a cup of tea) if you leave them in the tank for good, you may wish to remove it before it gets to that stage. (But while the water is brown, it doesn't hurt your bettas at all.)

From your picture, I can see that you are using a tank / container used specially for bettas. with a divider in between. I thought I saw briefly another female betta on the other side of the tank as well. It is wise to put a strand of hydrilla in the tank to beautify it. But without sand or something to hold the hydrilla, it will not live very long. (I am sure you know that). What I wanted to tell you is actually about the water level and a filter. If you are using a small container, installing a filter or attaching an air stone to a pump is absolutely unnecessary. This is because it makes turbulence in the water and may upset your betta who will never be able to enjoy their calm and peaceful environment. The second thing about the tank is with regards to the depth of water. You should not fill your tank to more than 8 inches deep. (If you are using a container specially made for betta - they are usually not more than 8 inches in height). The reason is because your betta will constantly surface to blow bubbles and breath. This is important because bettas can actually breath with their lungs and gills. (Hence, you see why a water pump is not necessary.) If the water is too deep (more than 8 inches), it adds a lot more effort for them to reach the surface and I bet your betta wouldn't like it.

There are many things about betta that you may need to know: Condition your water before changing it. Especially for full-moon! The chlorine content in tap water will either cause the fin to corrode, tear, or decolourise. If you feel your betta is not feeling well (listless), add a drop of methylene blue (I think I spell it wrongly but it is close) according to the volume of water in it. Add small quantities of aquarium salt to detoxify the water. (Do not add the umbrella leaves if they are under medications.)

If you want to breed (or allow your bettas to mate first), you need to consider (1) their compatibility, (2) the container and (3) after the eggs are laid. (There are pros and cons to mating them - and until then, you can pose another question. If not, this answer will be too long).

Enjoy your betta. I bet you'll like him. (Oh... give him a name, and her a name as well). Hahaha

=)

It looks like a fan tail to me, but in a few shots the dorsal fin is blocking the view of the top of the tail. If the bottom of the tail has longer rays than the top, it's a fantail. If the top and bottom are the same it's a super delta. Very nice looking fish too. It's almost show quality and certainly a cull from a show breeder I would think. If you are interested in breeding bettas, that's a good male to start with. You need to find a female with superdalta tail genes to pair him with for the best results.

Wow..that's actually pretty...it looks like a flower petal. I also have a Betta but it's tail is long and a little layered looking. Your Betta certainly has a unique tail, I've not seen that before.
