Whatever is going on there it must be very important & of high worldwide human interest since merely trespassing on the grounds is seen as such a high security threat that the use of deadly force is enforced (just for trespassing). A great example that the US Gov. is out of control.

If anything 'top secret' ever did really happen at Area 51, which still has yet to be proven conclusively (or even convincingly), I would feel pretty confident that nothing of the sort is happending currently, simply due to Area 51's high profile.
If the government were trying to hide something, they wouldn't be doing it in the one place that has attracted such a massive cult following... They'd be crazy not to use another secret base, or a base that to all appearances has another purpose... Besides, with all the land that the government owns, there could be a hundred 'Area 51s' out there that nobody has ever gotten a clue of their existence.
And as to the deadly force arguement, Area 51 is not the only military installation where soldiers and Military Policemen have the authorization to use deadly force.
So basically, what goes on is a lot of paperwork, the occasional heavily guarded 'guided tour', and a lot of laughing at a sucecptible public.

I am actually reporting from inside Area 51 right now! I've been here for 10 yrs and they won't let me out. They say I can't leave once I've been here.
Well I'll show them! I've snuck over to Area 50, which is between Areas 49 and 51 and have stolen a laptop. Now I will email the world and tell everyone what's been going on here! You won't believe it either! I'll list everything out below for you all.

One of the stories about "Area 51" holds that the government has abandoned the base for most purposes. Popular Mechanics magazine ran a long article claiming that most of the research and testing that used to be done in Nevada is now being done at a base In Utah...

I seen a documentary on TV on the Discovery Channel and a Engineer Scientice Man that was black band by the American Government and lost his identity and sorry I forgot his name said, it was full of different types and shapes of UFO's that they are trying to match the designs and also work out what type of metal they are made from and they can't because they are made of nothing you could find here on earth
