Does anyone know where I can find out if something is legal or illegal without having to physically talk to a lawyer?

Probably here if you had bothered to ask. Since you didn't go to a law library and check it out.

You can look it up in the same books the lawyers read at a local law library run by your court system or a university law school.

But you may have trouble locating the correct book or page. The librarian may be able to direct you to right place, but you will have to read and understand it on your own. In the United States, by law, no one may give you legal advice (including interpreting whether something is legal or not) except a lawyer.

If this is something really important, ask a lawyer.

look at the laws of your state on the internet or any libary that is a holder of state and federal laws (usually a college library sometimes a local library) or you can do a nexus search. Also most lawyers offer free consultations so talking to one shouldnt cost much.

some people on here are lawyers and may know, depending on what state you're in. So just ask it.
