Nikil, let's get straight to the heart of your question: is it necessary? No! Your night, your event, you're paying.
Judge the circumstance. A gala? Full formal may be required by the organisers. Subscription concert? Be **comfortable** so you can concentrate on your company and the repertoire you've spent your hard earned cash for in order to be part of the experience. Dictate the event, make it into what you want it to be. (Whenever I have been the penguin-suited monkey whose concert you might have patronised, it's your ears & mind I've been trying to engage rather than the silks and chiffon, nor your finest worsted.) Put this dress thing behind you. More and more people are thankfully doing just the same.
Relax, dress to suit your mood, the tastes of your company as you understand them, and have yourself a wonderful night out, in whatever takes your fancy. :-)
( has got the hang of it!)

No you don't have to. I live in San Antonio and when I went to watch symphony concerts, it was formal but some went with a nice dress shirt and jeans. Unless its a family concert like if they're playing bernstein or something like copland then just go however you like.

If I were going to the symphony orchestra I would dress up. I think it is best if you did that.

Symphony concerts are not nearly as formal as they once were. However, it is a level higher than going to the movies. I would suggest slacks, a collared shirt and dress shoes (not sneakers).

If it is an evening performance then dress up a little. It is not like you need a long gown or anything. Dress sort of as though you were going to church on a special holiday. If it is a matinee, then you can dress a little less fancy (nice blouse & skirt).

Look at the dress code as a rule. That's your best bet. You don't want to pay over hundred bucks and get kicked out of the hall for not dressing according to the dress code.

Regardless of anything, if you would feel more comfortable dressed up a little, then go for it. Wear what you would be comfortable in. I went to something similar, wore a nice skirt, a complementary fitted t-shirt and a dark denim jacket and strappy heels.

I would wear a nice button up or pullover with khakis.
But some symphonies are so desperate for audiences that you could go even more casual than I would and if your young enough, you could get away with it.

Dress formal. Black bottom, nice top usually does it. I always have to dress up, I'm usually part of the orchestra.
