My sister drove a volvo and we called it the tank. (just the regular 4 door car) she got in a bad car accident and walked away without even a scratch. The trunk wouldn't open and that's the only damage the car had.

Volvo makes very safe cars, but they are not the safest on the market...
Honda makes very safe cars, if you are looking for a less expensive car. Just because a car is german, does not make it safer, notice no German cars or SUV's
except for Audi. Honda has one of only two full crash development centers in the world. The New Honda Accord coming out this fall will have a 5 star rating.
In 2000, Honda opened the world's first indoor multi-directional crash test safety facility, located within our major R&D center in Japan. The just opened one in Ohio as well.

the safest car in the world is in the showroom. next safest is the one that is parked. if you must travel in one, volvo's are built very well indeed. Does that mean you can plow into a brick wall or into somebody else without an injury. No, you will be injured, but not as seriously as in some of the other cars on the road. It is a good vehicle for the "paranoid". Mind you, against a semi or a Leopard tank, you are gonna get hurt.
Just don't go there.

Volvos are very safe cars. All cars are being improved safety wise every year. A lot of it boils down to being a safe driver. You can be killed in any car that is made.

This is a debatable point.
The safest car, in a crash, in the USA right now is the Ford Taurus that is just hitting the showroom floors. It maxed out both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Federal Crash Tests in frontal, offset, and side impacts.
But that's not the whole story. Mercedes and Volvo are the only Manufacturers that maintain a staff of accident investigators to research every accident involving one of their vehicles in the home country. This is so that they can find out things the crash tests and accident reports don't find out. They look for things like skid-marks on the seat belts to determine if the occupants lied about wearing them.
But that's just crash safety. It's at least as important that you be able to avoid a crash as it is how the car behaves in one. The best cars for this are sports cars and the sedans that behave like one. BMWs are good for this among sedans. SUVs are notoriously bad at this, sometimes creating accidents (rollovers) just from their design.
But I like my favorite example of crash safety. You probably heard of it. A Mercedes-Benz S320 with a driver and three passengers hit a solid concrete abutment at an estimated speed of close to 100 miles per hour. One occupant survived. Do you remember reading about it?
It was Lady Diana Spenser, Dody Fayed, their Driver and bodyguard. The bodyguard is still with us because he was buckled in.
My final word. Most accidents are caused by inattention, or as I like to say, "Most accidents are caused by visibility problems. You can't see where you are going if you are driving with your head up your a**." The safest car in the world is the one driven and occupied by people who take responsibility for their own safety.
I hope this helps. All my best thoughts go out to you for safe driving.

actually all cars have their own safety features and their is no "safe car" just well built, Do some research on BMW they have one the best safety standards in the world and have had many testimonials on their features for saving lives. Volvo is good but BMW is better, with their DSC ( Dynamic Stability Control) it has less under or over steer and less % of rolling over, also front, side and back passanger air bags, battery disconnect in case of an accident so it wont catch on fire, Active headrest that pivit forward to prevent neck injuries, smart airbags that wont deploy if they dont have to, and so many more cool featuers that you need to check out. I personly own a BMW try it, The Ultimate Driving Machine

If you're talking exclusively safety, Volvo and BMW are great names. Under the dashboard of any modern Volvo, the wires are coloured as to dissuade thievery. Also, any electronics present are fixed as to present similar obstacles.
It takes a thief familiar with Volvo vehicles to steal one (and frankly, a lot of higher-end vehicles are going to be easier to take anyway).

Are running shoes safe? full speed run into a brick wall no injury's? think not? People have to get over this thinking traveling at 6 times the speed of feet is safe. Cars only give the occupants the illusion of safety. We have become unaware of the impact.
