I think it points to insecurity or feeling guilty about one's choices in life. If other women are happy, some women need to "attack".

In most cultures, men compete with each other for social power - who controls and owns the most crud. Woman have traditionally been barred from garnering "social success" in this way, because collectively, men have exploited the ways childbearing works differently between the genders. Because women too typically cannot have the same sort of success, and now, because our culture conditions both genders to chug along as though they cannot, this allows women to have "social success" by making themselves a commodity. So, for men, whoever owns the most commodities wins, and for women, whoever IS the "best" commodity wins. So, it's true that it is about "competition." It's dehumanization for both genders, and blows azz, but it keeps everyone busy and distracted - which they tend to like too much.

Because there not many males around who are in touch with their feminine side especially females out on their twenty first birthday - it is hard to know what william will please them and six storylines as told by brooke shields about the runaway bunny will give them a lovely suprise - and sometimes the best things in life come with a gift with a blue ribbon around the kitchen - wearing a denim jacket - why do you think other women want what other women are having off on their birthday ? banana smoothies are great on the level with you - ok- have a nice day.

Some women and men are disturbed. I've only met a couple of men and women who were really mean to other people, and they were both very mentally disturbed. One was a co-worker of mine that thought the CIA was following him-it turned out he had recently been let out of a sanitarium. Another co-worker has a sister in a mental institution-she is a pathological liar who has lied to get other people fired that she was jealous of.

I'm not a woman, but I think it could be because certain women (and men) lack confidence, security, and possibly a devine deity (God). They are so caught up with others and forget about living for themselves and the ones they love. If they find the true reason for living (which is love), then they will not be so mean.

I don't understand it either. But insecurity and jealousy play a big part here. Really sad. There are many women who are very competitive when it comes to attention. When they notice that there's someone who's better-looking/more attractive than them, they tend to nitpick and find even the smallest flaw in the other.

"Don't hate me coz I'm beautiful".. i think this quote pretty sums it up.

I link the competition angle - it fits what I hear from my female friends, they things they say about each other behind each others' backs.

But let's not lay the guilt on men. If a woman trash-talks her 'friend' for not looking good today, maybe it's because she wants to feel a little better than the other woman - but that's HER stuff, not mine. I'm not sitting back enjoying seing my friends' catfight.

ummm, why do you think women are so mean to men? why do you think men are so mean to other men?

what, do you think women are part of some kind of team and have to stand together?

as long as people are mean to other people, women will be mean to other women, we're all human. women have no more reason to be nice to other women than they do to be nice to men or than men have to be nice to women or other men.

one of the most interesting theories i've learned is reminiscent to brainwashing. basically, patriarchal society has adopted traditional notions of masculinity as the standard. thus, our society values competition. because men are seen as #1 in our society, we can't compete with them. so instead, we're taught to compete with each other.

it's also thought that if women are fighting each other, they won't pay attention to real issues like equality. it's pretty hard to come together as a group if you're bitching each other out about who has the hottest shoes. this way, men remain in control of our society.

Young women and girls can behave this way; the key word is "powerlessness". Grown-ups are far less likely to engage in 'mean' behavior. You haven't provided any examples or otherwise fleshed out your question in any way.
