a Joule is a unit of energy

It takes one Joule of energy to separate one coulomb of charge to a potential of one volt.

This question does not make sense as asked--coulombs are units of charge and Joules are units of energy, these are different things. You need to specify a voltage difference when you talk about coulombs and joules.

Depends on how much energy (in joules) are in the coulomb(s) of electrons.

One volt is a joule per coulomb. So if the coulomb is at one volt, then thats one joule of energy.
