You really have to know who you're buying from, it's safe if the person is legit... I advise you that there are a lot of "Nigerian Scams" out there, and a lot of people willing to send you a brick in the mail. I suggest Amazon, at least you know who you are buying from.

I've been selling and buying from ebay for 5 years now and I have not run into any difficulty other then a few people not happy with an item for example I sold a pair of slacks and when it came to her house she let me know that she wanted a refund because of pilling on the inside waist, sometimes you get picky people who think used items are suppose to be in excellent condition so I refunded her money back, not a big deal, sure theres scams but you have to read on how to avoid them, like never never does ebay asked for your pass word or your account #, What I would advise first times to do is buy some inexpensive items, get your feedback number up to around 10 then if you want sell an item and you will fill a little more comfortable each time, but it's important to take all of the tudorial, it real simplifys it. Good Luck I think you should try it, oh yeah look into Paypal, read up about it. It's a safe way to buy and sell your items.

It is relatively safe. I've shopped with them for as long as they have been operational and have never had a bad experience.

To reduce your risk make sure you shop with someone who has a good feedback record. Sells MANY items in the same price range as the item you plan to purchase. So don't buy a $1000+ item product from someone who has 1000 feedbacks for $1-2 items. Also make sure the person is in the United States.

I keep to sellers with at least 50 positive feedbacks but I have bought from people with fewer for a low cost item but the more expensive the item the higher the rating needs to be. I have also purchased from sellers out of the country but they usually have low cost items AND feedbacks numbering in the THOUSANDS. There are a lot of "super" sellers in Asia with direct access to cheap imitations, gray market items, etc.

Also understand how much your credit card will protect you. Generally CCs will not cover user-to-user auction sites but some may (I've heard of it happening/not happening both ways). Also keep with sellers that accept paypal instead of direct payment using their website.

Check prices compared to other sites such as Amazon.com, buy.com, newegg.com, etc. A lot of times, eBay isn't necessary cheaper but people automatically assume it is.

Electronics - Amazon, Buy.com, Newegg.com
Books - Amazon, buy.com, abebooks.com, half.com

If you are going to use your credit card on ebay or any other site, make sure the webpage where you give out your credit card information as a logo from "VeriSign", if you don't see this logo, this means that it is possible that you credit card will not go out encrypted.. Ebay or any other site, that uses credit cards, pays a fee for "VeriSign", to test and validate the site is 100% secure.

Myself I would stay away from "PayPal", as their security is poor and the hackers love breaking into their credit card webpage.\

For the most part it's safe, but with any website your giving your credit card number to, becareful of emails "checking" on your bank account number and what not. Anything that doesn't say "Hello (your name)" is not official. Scammers will say "Hello PayPal customer".
