HELP!!! I have a Gateway laptop that I am having problems with. It is out of warranty so that won't help. Every time I turn it on it only stays on for a few minutes then it will just shut right off. Sometimes it stays on for a couple of hours , other times it stays on for a couple of minutes. I think it might have something to do with the fan, because right when it shuts off the fan sounds really loud. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a hardware problem related to the motherboard, and it's probably not cost-effective to try and fix it. Sorry to say, but honestly, you probably can't fix it because laptop parts aren't generally interchangeable. You should back up everything on the laptop and get a new one.

I had a similar problem. The DC Jack is probably loose and the fan is probably clogged. Here is the cheap way of fixing it: take a portable fan and blow air into the fan of your laptop with that external fan. It will help cool down the laptop and will hlp clean out the fan. Try not to move the laptop around so much as that will loosen the DC Jack. Also, when using the laptop, put it on a table or solid surface and not on the couch or your lap as that will also allow dust from your clothes or couch surface to enter the fan and clog it. Or, you could always go and buy a new fan or DC Jack.. you'll have to do taht every 6 months or so.

This is al laptop, it doesn't have a cpu fan. I also have a Gateway. Considering how old it is it may need a new battery or a new power cord. Does it turn off when plugged in? Does it go through the shutdown sequence? Run some antivirus and defrag your hardr drive

Guess you've got it figured out already. Either it's getting too hot and shutting off or the system detects the fan is not working properly and shuts off.

I'd replace the fan and see what happens.

Most erratic shutdowns on laptops are due to a lose power jack.

You can attempt to repair it yourself, which is a challenging task due to the amount of parts and screws in a laptop and soldering, or you can find a site online that can do it for you, usually around $150.

Try removing the battery and cleaning off the leads with a mild abrasive cloth or sponge. Do both the leads on the battery and the pc. Good luck!

its prob. overheating, a air can of spray might help, i have used a vacume cleaner and it worked well, just make sure you are sucking from the output side of the fan otherwise you might damage the fan by spinning it backwards. it that doesnt work you will have to take it apart to clean out the passages and heatsink a job for the pros.

If the 2 minute shutdown is because you're doing something (i.e. the processor is being stressed) then something is overheating. Change the faulty fan.

Not real technical with inside the IPU but sounds like you are having a power supply problem. There is the thing in the IPU that supplies the power and it sounds like it is going bad. Had that problem myself and the person who built my computer said that is what it was. Know anybody who knows the technical names and you have your problem solved.

Could be a heat issue, that will usually kill a system quick. Open the case and power it up observing the fans.
