Isn't it amazing?

You tell people that you do not have a Recycle Bin icon on your desktop. They then tell you to either double click or right click your Recycle Bin icon. Er ........ hello.

Your Recycle Bin icon is a shortcut to a hidden folder called

C:\Recycler

Use Folder Options via Control Panel to unhide hidden folders and the navigate your way to C:\Recycler using My Computer and see if your Recycle Bin .ico file is there.

Right-click on the recycle bin and select 'Create Short Cut'

Now drag the short cut icon to the place you want it to be located and release the mouse button.

If the recycle bin icon is missing from your desktop, it may have just been ,moved off the side of the screen.

Right click the desktop, Select "Arrange Icons by" and click on 'Name'. The icons should all be arranged neatly on your desktop and the recycle bin will return.

From Microsoft's Website:

CAUSE
This issue may occur if any of the following conditions is true:
• A third-party program was used to hide the Recycle Bin.
• The TweakUI program was used to hide the Recycle Bin.
• The registry information for the Recycle Bin was deleted.
• A Group Policy setting was used to hide the Recycle Bin.

Note Windows XP Home Edition does not support Group Policy.

The solution involves editing your registry, so rather than detail the information here I have included a link to the relevant MS Article.

Right click on the desktop and choose properties. Then go to the Desktop tab. On the bottom left there is a button that says something like "Customise Desktop" you are then given the option of a few icons to be placed on the desktop!
