Yosemite is a bit further north than Southern California, however you can get almost the same "foresty" feeling in the southern part of Sequoia National Forest. The section just northeast of Bakersfield by Lake Isabella is only a few hours north of Los Angeles. Has the same great Sequoia trees and great camping areas.

There are some great "foresty" camp grounds in the Santa Barbara section of the Los Padres National Forest. Same for the section by lake Arrowhead/Big Bear. You can find all about them at this site:

The best are a little north, like Sequoia National Park. There are many to choose from. Go to the Auto Club for CA and US Dept of Forestry and Parks maps.
