Its like in between holidays and school, if you don't get stimulated enough over the holidays, you forget most of the stuff you learn.

When on the beach, getting a tan, read a text book!

Skills that lay dormant can go stale. I was once very good at rollerskating and softball. Since I've become an adult, I doubt I'd be as good.

People tend to forget what is not in front of them. If I stopped reading, I would get slower. I read pretty quickly now and keep at it so that I can get through school work faster. I type well, but when I was a secretary I typed twice as fast. I've lost it. Practice will get me back to where I was.

It's true in the context where this quotation is normally used. It applies to things like muscle tone and strength, mental agility. a foreign language, and so on. Others become so thoroughly learned that they are rarely forgotten, like riding a bicycle.

in somethings, if you don't do something you'll forget how to do them but other things you can do then stop and years later you can do it again like you never stopped
