I agree it depends on the company you work for. My company could care less. You should ask a trusted co-worker who has been there awhile and knows how your bosses may or may not react

Unless they stated - mandatory attendance - you are not required to go.

However-----

The upper management tend to notice who does and who does not show. This is a great way for you to blend with the executives in a non business structure, and allow them to get to know the person behind the job, and you can get to see the human being behind the suit.

It's also a great way for you to build some friendships and other ties that can pay off for you and your career later on.

But go ahead and blow it off - especially if you have no plans to stay there long.

I think it's important to make an appearance, even if for a short time. And you must appear to be glad to be there.

Managers look to promote people who take an active interest in their company. Someone who slacks their way through (or appears to be slacking) get passed up, and rightfully so.

Are you ready for this?

Maybe the boss doesn't want to go either. However, people do work together, so should be able to interact as often as necessary.

So....go. Even for a short time. It's shows you're not stuck up. It's not about you....it's about your willingness to interact socially and hopefully create additional avenues of trust.

unless you have something more urgent, then its probably a good idea to attend the picnic. it shows that you are a team player and that you like to socialize with others (even if you don't)

I don't go to the Christmas parties, Happy Hours, Picnics.... whatever. I never mix my personal life with my business life, and it certainly works out better .

It depends on what company you work for and in what capacity. You should show and mingle for at least 20 min. Then leave.

Are you on the "promotion track" in your company, or just a day-to-day worker bee?
