I would agree. Harry Potter might be a good book for you. It is easy to read and very well written (and very big right now). It is easy to get caught up in them. After my son and I became huge fans, my husband refused to get on the bandwagon. It was a passing fad in his mind. Well, we listened to the book on tape on a trip. So, then he was more willing to listen to the second book on the return trip. Upon getting home, he whipped through books 3 and 4 in about 2 1/2 days. He couldn't put them down. Books 4-7 are kind of long, but you won't notice once you start reading. In addition, Rowling also has planned these books out so well that she leaves little clues along the way. You could read 3 or 4 of them and read them again. You would find things you missed the first time around (although a lot of people don't read them more than once). And like most books, there is a lot more stuff in the books than the movies.
I remember when book 4 came out and I was at the bookstore. A little girl in front of me was so excited to see that the book was thicker than the previous three. She said "Cool Mom, it will last longer." No other books have been attributed to getting so many kids to read.
As for being Brittish, there are bits of the first ones that had words changed to reflect American terms better in the American versions of the books.
Dan Brown is also a very popular author these days. He writes mystery novels that deal with codes. Good books by this author are DaVinci Code, Angels and Demons, Digital Fortress, and Deception Point.
Michael Crichton doesn't have anything new at the moment, but his books are excellent too. A lot of people have read them. I liked Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Sphere the most, but a lot of people love his books.

The easiest way to answer this question would be to point you towards the bestseller list. Statistical, no duh answer that's definetly correct. So, it's at http://www.nytimes.com/pages/books/bestseller/.
OTher than that, it depends on what you like to read. A bit ago, everyone was reading "The Da Vinci code" and "THe Hitchiker's guide to the Galaxy" in my area. I suggest opening your eyes and looking around yours! James Patterson's books are everywhere, as are Nora Roberts'- at this exact time, though, what you will see most is Harry Potter due to the coming release.

I'm not sure what you mean. The most popular book in the US by far is, and long has been, the Bible. After that, the Harry Potter books.

Why? Read what you want, following what's popular often doesn't give you the satisfaction of reading what you want.
