There are more minutes of sunlight in it. Called the Summer Solstice.

it is all to do with the number of hours we have sunlight for that particular day. In the past before clocks people used to use the amount of daylight time as to how long there work etc. So being as it had more daylight than all the others in the year so it became the longest day.

Now i dont wanna sound geeky cos im not,but u may find this interesting....
Due to gravitational forces and the earth changing axis and therefore affecting rotational speed,to say no day is longer than 24hrs is incorrect, there are actually days that are minutely longer (and shorter)than 24hrs and the atomic clock has to be adjusted accordingly...these are called Leap Seconds (as in leap year). Bet u didnt know that, lol.
To answer your question, the term longest day refers to daylight hours only.

It refers to the longest amount of "day light"

The day light changes roughly 3-6 minutes per day, as far as sunrise and sunset times. Therefore the longest day and the shortest day(longest night) refers to the day when the day light(time between sunrise and sunset) start to increase (shortest) and decrease(longest).

The most light hours in the a day over the course of one year.
It's all to do with the Earth's yearly jaunt around the sun and the fact that the planet presents itself to our local star at an angle of 23.5 degrees, so at the summer solstice the north pole is at its closest to the sun.

Daylight, not day.

It is the longest day of daylight and Dec. 21 is the shortest day, meaning the least amount of daylight.

Hope that helps,
