they will sometimes get lint all over & will be stiff...how can I prevent this?

There is not really any way to prevent the lint but you can soften the clothes a little with the softener, I find that after i have dried the clothes on the line I will toss them in the dryer and a low or no heat cycle with a sheet of bounce and that seems to do the trick. throwing them in the dryer does help with the lint.

The others advice about a short stint in the dryer to soften your clothes is a good idea.
Now about the lint: You can prevent some lint by being careful on what you launder together, for instance if you wash a sweater with corduroy pants, the pants are going to be covered with lint. Never wash towels with anything but towels or a similar fabric like bath or spa robes. Always launder similar colors and fabrics together. Empty all pockets prior to putting items in the washing machine.
Here's a tip on removing some lint from your garments: When you put clothes in the dryer and they have lint all over them, you can put in with them about a yard of nylon netting material and tumble as usual. The nylon netting will "brush" the lint off your clothes while tumbling and it will be caught in the lint basket then. This does not work on all garments and fabrics, but does on most things!

After you take them off the line, fluff them in the dryer on the no-heat setting for 15-20 minutes. I only do this with jeans and the stuff that gets really stiff. Since the clothes are already dry, you can fluff a couple loads at once to save energy. The fabric softener idea combined with this would probably work even better.

Use some Downy in your rinse cycle ... even a little extra if you need to. It won't get rid of the lint, but it might make it fall off easy.

I have used a bit of white vinegar in my wash with wonderful results, the clothe and towels come out so soft and it also helps wash out the soap making the clothe last longer.

after the clothes dry on the line i throw them in a clothing dryer for a few minutes. this seems to soften them up and smooths some of the wrinkles

Buy a bottle of liquid fabric softener and add the recommended amount to the washing machine when loading.

Let them hang overnight. The morning dew helps to soften. So does being rained on. Smells good too.
