The needles and equipment used are sterilized, because they are standard medical products that are sterilized during manufacturing. There is also a chance that the prisoner could receive a stay of execution after the needles have been inserted as happened in the case of James Autry in October 1983 (he was executed eventually on 14 March 1984). Also it would be a hazard for those handling the equipment...

One reason for this is that cannulae are standard medical products that are sterilized during manufacture. Secondly, there is a chance that the prisoner could receive a stay of execution after the cannulae have been inserted, as happened in the case of James Autry in October 1983 (he was executed eventually on March 14, 1984). Finally, it would also be a hazard for those handling unsterile equipment

On the off chance the lethal injection fails, you aren't allowed to try again (Cruel and Unusual punishment). Therefore, infection from an unsterilized needle could theoretically become an issue.

In case the person administering the injection gets poked. It's also easier to just get a clean needle instead of keeping track of one that's been used over and over and over.

I know it sounds pointless, but it is a health regulation. All needles must be sterilised for health reasons.

the needles are prepackaged and sterile just like the ones purchased by diabetics...
brand x: wrong..the Court didn't say " one shot at lethal injection and then we'll try something else"- when the prisoner leaves the facility they are dead.

Interesting question.... Thing is there's no such thing, in terms of manufactoring, as an un- sterile needle -All needles for medical use are sterile until opened.

They use disposable needles. They do spend thousands saving the life of a sick man so the state can kill him.
