It is about an orphan named Oliver Twist in London at the time of Dickens. He runs away from the orphanize (which is an awful place to live at that time) and gets in with the wrong crowd, but he is basically a good kid. It is basically about how easy it is to fall into that trap. The lessons learned by Oliver aren't much different than they are today.

Does this help? I haven't read it in some time.

Mostly, it's about life among the underclass in London of Dickens's era. Oliver is an orphan, who is legitimate heir to a fortune, but he knows nothing about it and those who hope to control the money themselves want to hide the existence of another heir. So Oliver is raised in a poorhouse, subsequently becomes an apprentice to a brutal master, and then winds up with a group of children who live as pickpockets under the tutelage of a criminal named Fagan.

I just read the first chapter but from what I remember it is about an orphan boy who grows up in London. It is just about the poverty stricken children of that time period.
