Depends on defination.
A emachine is a ok computer, but is rarely expandable much.
I found a etower at a garage sale for $100 a while back.
I doubled the memory to 256meg (256meg max)
Though I did replace the hd with a bigger one, this pc is barely usuable despite being nearly 1ghz in speed.
Fortunately I only use it for web browsing and its works fine (and under WINXP btw)... but its intentionally doing nothing but IE & Boinc & Instant msg and rarely much else.
Personaly other than a dirt cheap price (garagesale) I would not bother buying one retail.

I would strongly recommend building your own desktop. In the long run it is much cheaper and nicer. A desktop from Dell, E-machines, HP, gateway, etc, will get out of date and are nearly impossible to update. Most computers become out of date and slow compared to new technology within 3 years. With a personalized computer you build yourself, you can have as much RAM as you want, as many Hard Drives as you want and more, without having to buy specific parts.

Do Not Buy an Emachine. I almost did. They are for more less kids that are in elementary school. They have no power and are not easy to upgrade. I look at them as a kiddie computer for your kids old enough to use a computer but not old enough to use programs that will need a bigger system. I bought a dell 4.5 years ago and it still runs good and spent 1250 bucks for it. Now 1250 will get you way more now than what I have. Even half that money should get you something non emachines to start.

I've had an eMachine for about 5-6 years now, worked perfectly, as long as maintain your system. It's a T2040. I never upgraded it from the factory install parts.
My next computer is going to be a DELL though. :) Have you seen their water-cooled system? WOW, five grand, but I drool when I go to their website.
If you're looking for a new computer, I try Dell first, those were suggested by the guy who helped put our LAN together at work, and they work great. Plus you can customize them any way you like on their site.

If you only plan on using it to connect to the internet to do emails. It's not a very good computer for gaming or work related jobs, such as using Excel or other softwares that requires a lot of memory and fast speed.
The e-machine has the cheapest configuration that you can use to get on the internet.

They are not Bad....
By that I mean they are like the Kia of computers. Cheap, and they work. No bells and whistles.
But they are by no means Good. They are just if you want a computer for basic use and do not want to spend a lot of money.

As a computer technician i would highly advise you not to purchase an Emachine. UNLESS it is just going to be for basic (and I mean basic) games or just for emailing. the computers are a pain in the A$$ to work on internally. hardware wise they are no different but software wise they stink. they have no additional features so it is as plain Jane as they come.

The only two things I can say about Emachines.
1. I had one, and it kept eating power supplys,
so does another friend who had one.
2. they are the worst company I ever tried to get a rebate for,
after filing, and sending the paperwork twice, I had everything
it required, but never got the rebate.
I will never spend a dime on anything emachines makes.

Are they good computers? For the most part no. Are they bad? Not nearly as bad as their reputation. They have improved since being purchased. by a larger company.

emachines in my opinion have always been the tough cheap computers. But just that. They aren't good quality and I wouldnt say they have the best performance.
