Socialism takes property from others by threat of violence and gives it to others.

THAT can never be freedom.

Socialism is manipulation of a market with the goal of forcing equitible distribution of goods. Terrible for most goods and services but good for access to medical resources and education.

Taxes fits your definition of socialism so I guess all countries on earth are socialist?

The extreme opposite of socialism, unregulated capitalism degrades liberty far more. Look at a country like Mexico. Lots of wealth, no redistribution, the furthest thing from socialism. do the citizens have liberty?

Really now, in the past 7 years, we have seen people rise up who want to say what consenting adults are allowed to do in their bedrooms and try to make the reproductive organs of women the property of the government.

And these people, not socialists, but far right social conservatives.

Who is REALLY antithetical to human liberty here?

Nah, I would say Fascism much like the book 1984 is the "antithetical" of liberty.

Lol, I looked the word up before I answered your question. I didn't want to get it wrong ;-)

@other posters, keep in mind English might not be his/her native language, no need to be harsh about grammar errors.

WTF! Socialism is the mix of communism and Capitalism. Its the in beween man.
Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production.
Capitalism is all about the indivual and inequality because of that. If you can't make it well boohoo for you. Sure you have Liberties but you have to pay in which side you are on.

All collectivism is by definition antithetical to human liberty.

Each person has a brain, each person has his own ideal, unless you allow each person to pursue his own ideal limited only in that he may not limit another's pursuit of his, then you're reducing liberty. Socialism, like all forms of collectivism, is a centralized system put in place to realize one society-wide ideal - which means to impose one ideal on everyone. That requires convincing everyone or, to the extent you can't convince someone, depriving him of his liberty.

Socialists talk in terms of "group action" but what if an individual doesn't want to go along? Al Gore wants "us" to "change our lifestyles" for his as-yet unproven theory but what if I like my lifestyle the way it is? Either they have to let me be and give up their society-wide ideals, or they have to force me to change - that's antithetical to liberty.

Financial divide of a garrish mix of wealth and borderline poverty in America could be called inhumane and a lack of liberty.

As OIscar Wilde said, man should simply LIVE and not chase money all his life.
