What do you consider "big" for a tank size? Pacus get to be at least 12-18", or larger depending on his species. Chances are very good that what's "big" to you isn't to him. No tank should be smaller in any dimension than the fish is long, so you should have him in at least a 30 gallon as a baby, you'll eventually need a tank at least a 55 gallon, then something even larger.

These are normally schooling fish when they're younger, so what you're seeing is most likely his way of feeling vunerable without having others of his kind arouns. But considering the size to which they'll grow, getting several isn't a good option either.

As with any fish that size, you'll have to test frequently for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in their tank - too much buildup will poison your fish - and do water changes several times each week.

What were you thinking when you bought a fish that gets as big as garbage-can lid and weighs 45 #'s?
