Because, LIKE George Washington, - nobody with all those qualities wants the job. The hours are 24/7; there's NO privacy; somebody's ALWAYS in trouble & wants something from you; you don't really "live" at the White House- so you have to be carefull you don't scratch the furnishings; there's always people saying you're WRONG & making up stuff about you... And if you make the slightest mistake- it's all over the TV News & Newspapers- with everyone calling for your head! ... Would YOU want a job like that for 4 years- with no time off for good governing??! (And by the way, Washington didn't really "run" for the job...-He was drafted into it, and couldn't WAIT to get out & back to Mt. Vernon. ).

People like George Washington only come along once every 500 years or so. The fact that he was surrounded by a dozen or so like-minded men of character is truly amazing if you think about it.
It's sad to think that what the Founding Fathers created may be in the process of falling from grace.

George Washington didnt have to deal with TV rates and radio spots. No televised debates, no internet, campaigns are horrendously expensive things to run: Telephone banks, posters, bumper stickers, staff, etc, all expect to be paid. The onyl way to win in America nowadays is to outspend your opponent.
This begs the question, why would a candidate spend MILLIONS to make $140,000 a year? For a maximum of 8 years? That's not a career, that's a temp job, and no matter what. ANY other job after that is less, well, everything.
So why do it?
AFTER the Presidency, the VERY lucrative Lecture Circuit.
Until we have true campaign finance reform in this country, we will only get those persons who have to sell their souls to corporations as candidates. And Big BUsiness will not spend a dime on you unless you do what THEY want you to od: And of course, that will be anything which is advantageous to their business, whether it's in the country's best interest or not.

The last one we had didn't do so well, Jimmy Carter was all those things, he just wasn't a good president. When the nation was struggling he didn't take unnecessary trips, got rid of the presidential yacht that cost the taxpayers 300,000 a year just to maintain. He busted his butt for a middle east peace solution, that had a chance til Sadat was assassinated in Egypt. I know the right wing nut jobs are going to be all over me but it is the truth. he didn't handle the Iranian hostage crisis very well either. After the tragic accident with the Marine helicopters in a desert sand storm he lost his will and the element of surprise.

Obama has generated over 25 million dollars from small private contributors. He's at least attempting not to be bought.
The costs of these campaigns are outrageous. How can a candidate win without million$ from lobbying groups and special interests?
Fred Thompson likes Bush too much for my tastes. I think people would only go for a Republican who's distanced himself from the neocons. That isn't Thompson.

Washington's wife had the slaves. He did not approve.
An honest, smart non corrupted and fair president would not have a chance, as he/she would need large corporations in their pocket and large corporations are, as a rule, not honest, smart, non corrupted and fair.
I like Ron Paul and I would vote for him, even if he is a Republican.

What is a "honset" candidate?
As for Washington, he wasn't perfect. He owned slaves.

There is one: Ron Paul!
But you don't hear about him on the news much BECAUSE he is honest and doesn't take money from the media corporates that controls the MSM content.
Therefore, I suggest you get your nose out of the news like CNN, Fox, MSNBC, ABC, etc., and onto the internet and learn more about this this man!
"THE INTERNET -- EVERYBODY HAS A SHOT".

B/c it's the world we live in. You need $$$$ to run for president either from a party or from a personsl fund or sponsering company.
Party: wont sponser you if you dont follow their mainstream ways.
Person Fund: how'd u get alllll that money? probably big business.... doubtful it was ethical
Companies: you're in their pockets already
Can't happen unless it was Robin Williams in Man of the Year. that's a good president.

You mean like Mike Gravel....in my opinion he is exactly what the people of this country truly need, to get us back on track.
My hope is that Mike Gravel will be our next president. Even if he does not get elected, I hope that he will, at least, strongly influence the party platform.

Ron Paul would be my second choice, and Mike Gravel my first! *sm*
