why are network cards for laptops more expensive than network cards for a desktop?

A combination of form factor and volume of sales leads to a higher price of laptop related hardware. Desktops have a lot of internal space for installing cards and there are many more desktops than laptops so mass production and competition lead to them being cheaper to purchase.

Laptop parts are more expensive for couple reasons. They are harder to make, they are portable (They have to design it to be protected against static).
